Cycling Through Tyne Valley on PEI

The Tyne Valley cycling tour features a pleasant ride and beautiful introduction to Prince Edward Island. The distance of the ride is 42 to 55 kilometers or 27 to 35 miles. It covers the western part of the island which is less populated than the central part, however you will be blown away by the beauty of this particular tour.

Tyne Valley is a small village of remarkable charm and hospitality. It features restaurants and active pubs with a cluster of old homes and comfortable and affordable bed and breakfast establishments cottages and hotels. In addition, there are craft shops, and other small stores selling a locally produced hand knit sweater. The Tyne Valley oyster festival takes place during the summer months.

The ride start outside the village at Green Park. Make time to tour the restored Victorian mansion and the shipbuilding museum located here in Green Park. You can also visit the parsonage made famous by LM Montgomery in her book Anne of Green Gables. Yet another museum focuses on the oyster industry. You can cycle through areas that highlight Native American culture as well, as this is the home of the Mi'kmaq tribe. Most of the quiet country roads take you near the shore for a constant view of the ocean as you roll through tiny seaside villages.

There are no big hotels along the way only more comfy B&Bs; and cottages, one located in Bideford and the other in Tyne Valley, itself. The Mi'kmaq Community also offers inexpensive lodging, too. If camping is your preference then look for campsites along the route, some of which feature small cabins and cottages for rent. These cabins are simple, foam mattress and bunk bed set up with a table and chair and maybe electricity. These cabins / cottages and their locations along the tour are listed in the visitor's guide or available online.

The land and terrain between Tyne Valley and Green Park is moderately hilly, so expect a workout on the ride. Still it is considered a relatively easy ride compared to the other tours available. As well along the way don't forget to stop at one of the many other PEI tourist and travel destinations such as Cavendish Beach, Anne of Green Gables, or even a friendly round of golf on one of the world famous PEI Golf Courses.
