Phil Mickelson - A Golf Legend

Phil Mickelson started his golf career in 1988 at Arizona State. He attended school through a golf scholarship. He had enormous success at college, becoming only the second collegiate golfer to be named to the first team All-American all four years. In 1990, he became the first lefty to win the U.S. Amateur title.

Mickelson's greatest achievement as an amateur was when he won the 1991 Northern Telecom Open. The tournament was an event of the PGA. Mickelson became just the fourth golfer in history PGA to win a PGA tournament as an amateur.

Mickelson has become a pro soon after. He continued to win many PGA Tour including the Byron Nelson Golf Classic and the World Series of Golf in 1996, AT & T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 1998, the Colonial National Invitation in 2000 and the Grand Hartford Open in 2001 and again in 2002.

In 2000, Mickelson won the Buick Invitational. The victory ended Tiger Woods series of six consecutive wins the PGA Tour. Then, Mickelson said he was not interested in being the villain who finished the series history. He said he was only interested in playing his best golf.

Mickelson despite success on the Tour, he has acquired a reputation as a golfer who could not win when the stakes were highest. Before 2004, Mickelson has never won a major tournament (the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open or PGA Championship). He played very well in them, placing second or third six times from 1999 to 2003.
