Golf-Easiest/Easier part of the game?

When I started playing in high school, has noticed many friends had much better capacity of ball striking against me, but had the same experience as I play. They werent any good (105-110?), But struck Decent ball with driver and irons. I could not he hit 10 feet with irons. This lead me to many hours over the putting and chipping / green pitch where I knew I'd be at least one bullet struck. I know everyone is different, but for a bogey golfer average, how 10, 150 yards 5 iron shots hit the green? Is the bread and butter for an average player? or at least a level where they rarely bit or higher? I was mid-80's for a year with so / so ball striking, so curious, where I measure up or my short game is just that good (3 putt can be 1 hole dbogey per revolution, many chips / flops go at least 3 feet)
